Are you the Phillip Allen who wrote a Letter to the editor last Sunday 5/23/2010 in Hendersonville NC on a desire for civil discourse? I belong to a three person group with the same objective in mind. It is composed of one flaming liberal, a listener and one who is slightly to the right of Genghis Khan. If you are that person I would like to open a dialog with you. Is that possible? Anthony Jeric 828 890 8035
Thank you for this thought provoking article, Phillip! I, too, was disheartened by how some have made negative remarks about assisting Haiti. If only they knew how rich the U.S. is in comparious to Haiti or numerous countries around the globe. We live like kings and queens compared to many.
It is probably both and a good bit of apathy or mental fatigue amid our busy lives. Thanks for the reminder. We need nudges and, most of the time more, to remind us that our adult responsiblity should be harnessed with the passions of our youth when we believed that we had the power to correct injustice and make the world a better place.

Yesterday's news of Edward Kennedy's death again brought to mind a comment I made a year ago. After reading an online article about him, I read some of the readers' comments following. One somewhat angry comment stated, "His people ought to just tell the truth. He is dying!" My response was, "We are all dying. He has just decided to live as fully as possible in whatever time he has left. We should all try that." Edward Kennedy was an enigma. But as he aged, he gained strength, confidence, and the knowledge that he could do something great to help those who had no voice.

Phillip I agree totally but like the article says the religious right have hijacked prayer and made it political. If Obama or this Democratic Congress would do anything to try to separate prayer and politics the right and Fox News would be all over it. So I believe we have to keep our prayers personal and personally apply the principles of the Constitution while we allow the right to continue to be fearful but also let them know that we disagree... I guess it is a time for a letter to the editor.
