Where Are The Christian Voices?

How pleasantly surprised I was to see a faith group in my area taking a stand for something I know Jesus Christ himself would publicly proclaim. For Christians, the test of faithfulness is always in how we treat the vulnerable of society (Drew Smith's blog entries on this subject).

I have seen or heard no other statement made by a local congregation regarding this moral imperative. In fact, one local Christian denomination sent an email from one of its regional offices propagating at least one of the lies about the proposed health care reform. What is wrong with our faith community when it will not only commit sins of omission by saying nothing, but will openly perpetrate sins of commission. I'm not sure which one is worse!

And what is all this fear, anger and raw manipulation erupting around the health care reform discussion? Angry mobs, some carrying weapons, attend town hall meetings to scream about all kinds of utter nonsense! Is it just paranoia? No,I agree with Jim Evans; I think it is displaced racism – and again, the faith community is either silent or part of the screaming crowd!

It is probably both and a good bit of apathy or mental fatigue amid our busy lives. Thanks for the reminder. We need nudges and, most of the time more, to remind us that our adult responsiblity should be harnessed with the passions of our youth when we believed that we had the power to correct injustice and make the world a better place.
